AAP MP Sanjay Singh Accuses Police of Detaining Party Worker Amid Election Chaos in Delhi

The ongoing Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 have been anything but smooth, with allegations of misconduct and clashes between political parties overshadowing the democratic process. On Wednesday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh took to social media platform X to accuse the police of detaining one of his party workers, Uday Gill, "without any reason."

Singh alleged that Gill, a former Chaupal Head of the Valmiki community, was detained at the Mandir Marg police station since 8:30 am despite having no valid charges against him. The MP claimed this was part of a broader pattern of harassment aimed at silencing AAP workers and supporters. “I appeal to the people of the Valmiki community in Delhi to vote against this ‘gundagardi’ [hooliganism],” Singh said in a video message shared on X.

DCP New Delhi Responds

Contradicting Singh’s claims, the official handle of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), New Delhi, issued a statement explaining that Gill was detained for violating Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines. According to the DCP, AAP workers had placed an extra table near a polling booth, along with party symbols—a clear violation of ECI rules.

“There was an extra table and party symbol on the table violating the ECI guideline; therefore, the extra table and party symbol were removed,” the post read. Additionally, it stated that Gill and his accomplice were physically forcing voters to approach their party’s table, further breaching election protocols.

BJP vs AAP: Battle Beyond Ballots

The tension escalated when Singh accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers of obstructing AAP volunteers from sitting at designated tables near polling booths. He specifically mentioned incidents at Tughlaq Lane, where he claimed BJP activists engaged in aggressive behavior to prevent AAP representatives from performing their duties.

Adding fuel to the fire, Singh alleged that BJP members distributed cash to influence voters in North Avenue N Block. He claimed sums ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 were handed out to sway public opinion, while some individuals’ fingers were inked to falsely indicate they had already voted. When confronted, these perpetrators reportedly fled in a vehicle bearing a Haryana registration plate.

Saurabh Bhardwaj Joins the Fray

The controversy gained further traction when AAP leader and Greater Kailash candidate Saurabh Bhardwaj accused the Delhi Police of deliberately hindering voters in Chirag Delhi. Bhardwaj alleged that barricades were erected near polling stations, preventing residents—especially those living in poorer areas—from accessing voting booths.

“You have been standing here since morning to influence elections,” Bhardwaj said, addressing law enforcement officials. “Why are the barricades put here? Which senior officer authorized this?” He also accused local police officers of conducting raids on private AAP premises the previous night, allegedly targeting party assets and materials.

Voter Access and Electoral Integrity

These allegations come amid reports of widespread irregularities across multiple polling booths in Delhi. From accusations of fake voting by burqa-clad women in Seelampur to chaotic scenes in Jangpura, the capital witnessed numerous complaints about electoral malpractices. Despite tight security measures, concerns persist over whether all citizens can exercise their right to vote freely and fairly.

Calls for Accountability

Sanjay Singh has urged the Election Commission to intervene, questioning how such violations could occur under its watch. “Is this a joke?” he asked rhetorically, referring to the alleged cash-for-votes scheme. Meanwhile, his legal team is working to secure Uday Gill’s release, though the latter remains detained as of writing.

With the counting of votes scheduled for February 8, both AAP and BJP continue to trade barbs, each accusing the other of undermining the sanctity of the electoral process. As tempers flare and tensions mount, Delhi voters find themselves caught in the crossfire of a bitter political battle—one that threatens to overshadow the very essence of democracy itself.

Final Thoughts Without Conclusions

As polling concludes and results loom, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on Delhi. Will these controversies shape the outcome of the elections? Or will voters rise above the noise to deliver a verdict based solely on governance and policy promises? One thing is certain: the events unfolding today will leave a lasting impact on the city’s political landscape.
