Jaishankar Advocates for Collaboration in the Indian Ocean Region's Growth and Security
In a speech at the 8th Indian Ocean Conference, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of cooperative efforts among nations in the Indian Ocean region to foster growth and ensure security.

During the inaugural session of the 8th Indian Ocean Conference held in Muscat, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the necessity for countries within the Indian Ocean region to collaborate on development and security initiatives. He described the region as a crucial global lifeline, where cooperation can significantly influence growth and stability.
Jaishankar pointed out the current dynamics of global affairs, noting sharp disruptions in the Middle East and West Asia that have substantial maritime implications. “The Indian Ocean is at the heart of how the world operates today,” he stated, urging nations to recognize their interconnectedness, despite differences in history, geography, and political systems.
He remarked, “Our journey toward new horizons is best undertaken as a coordinated group.” Jaishankar highlighted that, in an era marked by volatility, stability should be a baseline aspiration. Beyond merely seeking security, he called for shared ambitions that could be achieved through mutual support and coordination.
Addressing challenges faced by Indian Ocean nations, Jaishankar noted that resource constraints and economic hurdles impede progress. Many countries are struggling to meet their Sustainable Development Goals, with debt and imprudent borrowing exacerbating these issues. He reinforced India’s commitment to playing a constructive role in enhancing capabilities and supporting regional partners during crises.
Jaishankar also underscored the need to rebuild connectivity, disrupted over decades of colonial influence. He emphasized the importance of transparent and inclusive connectivity initiatives, ensuring that projects benefit all involved parties rather than being imposed unilaterally.
The Minister raised concerns regarding the monitoring of Exclusive Economic Zones and securing fishing interests, as well as issues such as illegal trafficking and terrorism. He stressed that addressing these challenges collectively is vital for the future of the Indian Ocean region.
As the conference progresses, participants are expected to engage in discussions aimed at fostering deeper collaboration to realize shared goals in growth and security throughout the Indian Ocean.
