UP CM Dismisses Reports on Faecal Bacteria in Sangam, Labels Them as Defamatory Propaganda
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asserts that the Sangam's water is safe for bathing and drinking, countering reports of faecal contamination as attempts to tarnish the Maha Kumbh's reputation.

In response to recent reports suggesting elevated levels of faecal bacteria in the waters of the Sangam during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has firmly dismissed these claims. He characterizes them as unfounded propaganda aimed at undermining the sanctity of the event and the faith of millions of devotees.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had recently informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) about non-compliance with primary bathing water quality standards at various locations in Prayagraj, citing high levels of faecal coliform bacteria. These bacteria, typically found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals, serve as indicators of potential contamination, suggesting the possible presence of harmful pathogens.
Addressing these concerns, Chief Minister Adityanath emphasized the state's commitment to maintaining the purity of the Sangam's waters. He highlighted that all pipelines and drains in the vicinity have been sealed, ensuring that only treated water is released into the confluence. Continuous monitoring by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has reportedly yielded positive results, with Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels near the Sangam recorded at less than three, and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels ranging between 8-9 mg/L. These indicators suggest that the water is not only suitable for bathing but also for consumption.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that factors such as sewage leaks and animal waste could contribute to increased faecal coliform levels. However, he asserted that current measurements indicate concentrations below the permissible limit of 2,500 Most Probable Number (MPN) per 100 ml, as per established standards. This, he argued, contradicts the allegations of contamination and points towards a deliberate attempt to defame the Maha Kumbh.
In his address to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Adityanath underscored the significance of the Maha Kumbh as a societal event, transcending political and organizational boundaries. He expressed pride in the state's role in facilitating the congregation, which has witnessed participation from over 56 crore devotees to date. The Chief Minister urged detractors to refrain from politicizing incidents such as the recent stampede, emphasizing the administration's commitment to supporting affected families and ensuring the safety and well-being of all attendees.
As the Maha Kumbh progresses, the Uttar Pradesh government continues to focus on maintaining environmental standards and addressing any challenges that arise. The administration remains vigilant against misinformation, striving to uphold the event's sanctity and the devotees' faith.
